Bar Sport

A Glimpse on Today’s Italy

Given the success of the movie cycles presented in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and thanks to the fruitful collaboration with the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, the Italian Cultural Institute is pleased to present in 2018 a new cycle, A Glimpse on Today’s Italy, which will include movies produced in the last years which wish to illustrate in a rather hironic manner some of the most pressing issues of contemporary Italy.

From Stefano Benni’s book by the same title

1976. Bar Sport is inaugurated in a small provincial town near Bologna. The manager, called Onassis because his stinginess, shares for the occasion a couple of bottles of Lambrusco and some pastries with his old friends and with newcomer Eros, a talkative know-all, while poor Bovinelli tries in vain to turn on the bar‘s sign. From the summer ice creams to the Christmas raffle, the people that populate Bar Sport gather day after day, between pleasant chatter and witty jokes, card games and bocce tournaments. A year spent in the company of the sullen Muzzi and the ingenious Cocosecco, of the busty cashier Clara and of the pedantic surveyor Buzzi, of a very young and reckless cyclist and a grandfather with a catharral cough, a boastful playboy and two good old ladies wearing fox stoles even in the middle of summer. And finally Luisona, the doyen of pastries: a custard doughnut that has never been eaten and has been stored for decades as if it were a work of art.
