New Italian Cinema

logo controluceThe cultural promotion carried out by the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney continues also outside the State of NSW, this time in collaboration with the Associazione Controluce based in Rome. We are therefore pleased to present a new film festival focused on some of the most recent Italian film productions.

The cinema series, entitled New Italian Cinema, will be curated by the film producer and curator Christian Pazzaglia and the Roman director and screenwriter Antonio Falduto. The former recently curated and directed the Bangalow Film Festival in collaboration with the Institute. A successful event, with eight Italian titles scheduled, and which used the original drive-in formula for the inauguration, also adopted to circumvent the restrictions imposed by the pandemic.

New Italian Cinema will present some interesting and recently produced movies, and will take place at The New Farm Cinema in Brisbane between 25 and 28 March 2021, including the following seven titles:

Thursday, 25 March

  • 7.00 pm Volevo nascondermi (Hidden Away) by Giorgio Diritti, 120’estate romana
  • 9.30 pm Estate romana (Roman Summer) by Matteo Garrone (special presentation), 90’

Friday, 26 March

  • 2.00 pm Rosa Pietra Stella (Rose Stone Star) by Marcello Sannino, 90’
  • 4.00 pm Guida romantica a posti perduti (Romantic Guide to Lost Places) di Giorgio Farina, 107’
  • 7.00 pm Fuori era primavera (Outside It Was Spring) di Gabriele Salvatores, 75’

Saturday, 27 March

  • 2.00 pm Il ladro di giorni (Stolen Days) by Guido Lombardi, 105’
  • 4.15 pm Guida romantica a posti perduti (Romantic Guide to Lost Places) by Giorgio Farina, 107’
  • 7.00 pm Figli (Kids) by Giuseppe Bonito, 97’
  • 9.00 pm Rosa Pietra Stella (Rose Stone Star) by Marcello Sannino

Sunday, 28 March

Five of the above films were produced in 2020 and one in 2019, while Garrone’s feature film is a 2000 hit.

Christian Pazzaglia has curated and produced film and multidisciplinary programs and special events for some of the main festivals, cinemas, cultural and artistic institutions in the Netherlands (Van Gogh Museum, IDFA, EYE, Goethe-Institut, Institut Français, FOAM) and Hong Kong (M +). Following his move to Australia, Christian curated retrospectives and film-concerts for the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney and Melbourne, as well as collaborating with Palace Cinemas, Ritz Cinema and Sydney Living Museums. Since 2018 he has curated and produced the acclaimed Kinokonzert silent movie program with live musical accompaniment for the Goethe-Institut.

mibac logodgc 30 07 2018newbluA graduate of Bologna’s DAMS, Antonio Falduto was assistant director of Ettore Scola and Steno. Director and screenwriter, he has presented several works in both roles in all the most prestigious European festivals. He worked for the Australian Film Corporation and the China Film Group Corporation. He is director of the Controluce Association for the promotion of Italian cinema abroad under the patronage of MIBACT, Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities.
