Join editors Giorgia Alù (University of Sydney) and Elena Bellina (New York University), together with contributors Flavia Marcello (Swinburne University of Technology and the University of Sydney) and Anthony White (University of Melbourne) for the presentation of Captivity and Creativity: The Cultural and Material Production of Italian Prisoners in Allied Hands (1940-1947) (Fordham University Press, 2026). Bringing together international scholars and developed from an Australian Research Council-funded project, this groundbreaking volume is the first to examine the artistic, literary, and material production of Italian prisoners of war and civilian internees held across Australia, Africa, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States during and after the Second World War.
Professor Adrian Vickers (University of Sydney) will serve as respondent, offering reflections on the volume and leading a conversation with the editors, authors and audience.
During the event, the speakers will also showcase DARCI (Digital Atlas of Creative Captivity), the digital platform that maps and documents the rich artistic, literary, and material production of WWII Italian detainees across the world.
