The Italian Cultural Institute Sydney, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Sydney, is pleased to present a new appointment in the Traces of Italy series, exploring the enduring legacy of Italian artists and their contribution to Australia’s cultural heritage.
In the 1870s, when Sydney had very few professionally trained sculptors, Italian artists played a pivotal role in shaping the city’s artistic identity. This fascinating lecture will explore the remarkable careers of Achille Simonetti, Giovanni Fontana, and Tomaso Sani, three master sculptors whose works transformed Sydney’s public spaces and some of its most iconic buildings.
From the grand statuary of Bridge Street and the General Post Office to monuments in public parks, their sculptures left an enduring mark on the city’s landscape, sometimes even provoking public debate. Discover the stories behind these extraordinary artists and the lasting influence of Italian craftsmanship on Sydney’s architectural and cultural heritage.
The lecture will be presented by Dr Lorraine Kypiotis, Head of Undergraduate Studies at the National Art School and lecturer in Art History. Holding a PhD in Art History from the University of Sydney and a Master’s degree in Italian Renaissance Studies, Dr Kypiotis is a highly regarded speaker, regular guest lecturer at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and resident art historian on ABC Nightlife.
