Italian artist Leonardo Cumbo taking part in the ‘Sculpture by the Sea Bondi 2026’ Exhibition
Sculpture by the Sea, the world’s largest free public sculpture exhibition, returns to Sydney’s spectacular Bondi-to-Tamarama coastal walk from 16 October to 2 November 2026, celebrating its 30th edition with more than 100 sculptures by artists from Australia and around the world.
Among this year’s participating artists is Italian sculptor Leonardo Cumbo, who will present The Breath of Aeolus, a new large-scale installation inspired by Aeolus, the Greek god of the winds. The work depicts a child playfully blowing a soap bubble into the air, held in place by three elastic-like bands anchored to the ground by stone blocks. Combining Carrara marble, bronze, stainless steel and paint, the sculpture explores movement, balance and the interaction between natural forces and human intervention. Cumbo will also present two smaller works as part of the Sculpture Inside exhibition.
Based in Catania Italy, Cumbo is a sculptor and multidisciplinary artist whose work has been exhibited internationally, including in Turkey, Japan and Australia. He has previously participated in Sculpture by the Sea exhibitions in Bondi and Cottesloe, and his works are held in public and private collections in Italy and Australia.
The Italian Cultural Institute Sydney is pleased to continue its decade-long collaboration with Sculpture by the Sea, supporting the participation of Italian artists in one of Australia’s most significant public art events. Over the years, this partnership has brought the work of several Italian artists to Australian audiences.
