Fellini Retrospective: Nights of Cabiria (Le notti di Cabiria)

Celebration for the 100th anniversary of Federico Fellini’s birth

Thanks to the success of the first series of screenings of Federico Fellini’s movies, we have decided to extend the series to offer to the Australian public a rare and complete retrospective of all the movies of the legendary Italian director. Therefore, the Fellini Retrospective organized by the Italian Cultural Institute in collaboration with Randwick Ritz Cinema on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great master of Italian cinema continues with the screening of Nights of Cabiria (Le notti di Cabiria) (1957).

The retrospective, organised by the Ritz Cinema, immediately found the enthusiastic participation of the IIC who has engaged the expertise of Christian Pazzaglia to open the series and introduce some of the titles listed in the program. The public will be invited to interact with Pazzaglia at the end of the screening through Q&A sessions.

Cast: Giulietta Masina, François Périer, Franca Marzi, Amedeo Nazzari

Introduction by Christian Pazzaglia

Plot: Rome, 1957. A woman, Cabiria, is robbed and left to drown by her boyfriend, Giorgio. Rescued, she resumes her life and tries her best to find happiness in a cynical world. Even when she thinks her struggles are over and she has found happiness and contentment, things may not be what they seem. In the film’s famous last sequence, Cabiria walks the long road back to town when she is met by a group of young people riding scooters, playing music, and dancing. They happily form an impromptu parade around her until she begins to smile through her tears. The movie won the 1957 David di Donatello for Best Director and Best Production (Federico Fellini and Dino De Laurentiis), the first prize at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival for Best Actress (Giulietta Masina) and an Oscar in 1958 as Best Foreign Movie.
