Design Diplomacy

Artist Silvia Tuccimei in conversation with Architect Enrico Taglietti

DESIGN Canberra – “Vivere all’Italiana“ Week

On the occasion of the Design Diplomacy series within the DESIGN Canberra Festival, well-known architect Enrico Taglietti, who designed the Chancellor’s office of the Italian Embassy and supervised the construction of the Italian Ambassador’s Residence, and Italian artist Silvia Tuccimei, whose beautiful sculpture Flower Power adorns the gardens of the Residence, will be in conversation with Italian Ambassador Stefano Gatti.

Design Diplomacy is a series of public conversations in ambassadors’ and high commissioners’ residences and is part of DESIGN Canberra. Throughout November 2018, over 100 events, exhibitions, talks, tours, activations, markets, collaborations, artist studios and open homes will be showcased as DESIGN Canberra, transforming the nation’s capital into a new platform for the best in design. The festival, now in its 5th year, is for all interests and ages and most events are free. Geometry is the theme of this year’s program, referencing Canberra’s distinctive form. Design Diplomacy, on the other hand, is based on a simple idea of introducing interesting topical Canberra design personalities to local media and audiences in a form of dialogue with an international colleague.

In 2018, the DESIGN Canberra festival will celebrate the work, poetics, personal style and contribution to the nation’s capital of architect Enrico Taglietti (b. 1926). As part of this celebration, DESIGN Canberra has curated a series of events and exhibitions, and a symposium will be presented at the National Gallery of Australia with local, national and international speakers to reflect on and celebrate Taglietti’s lasting and important contribution to Canberra’s built environment.

tagliettiEnrico Taglietti is recognized as an important architect and a leading practitioner of the late 20th century organic style of architecture. His unique sculptural style draws upon Italian free form construction and post-war Japanese architecture. He has designed many houses, schools, churches and commercial buildings in Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne and his projects have won numerous RAIA awards. In March 2007 Enrico was awarded Australia’s most prestigious architecture prize—the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) Gold Medal for Architecture.

Silvia Tuccimei was born in Rome in 1960. In 1983 she obtained a diploma at the CSIAtuccimei (Centro Scolastico per le Industrie Artistiche) in Lugano, Switzerland and subsequently moved to Paris, where she attended for 10 years the Angel-Perez sculpture studio. Here she pursued her obsession with the human form and geometric shapes. In Paris, her new environment caused Silvia to re-define her use of line, form and colour in a way that peels away the layers of the “seen world” in order to expose the under-lying fragility of life. For over 25 years Silvia has explored this theme through painting and sculpture and established an international reputation that has her work in constant demand. The artist is already known in Australia for having exhibited two of her sculptures at Sculpture by the Sea in 2013 and 2016 and for having held a solo exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute in 2015.
