A Glimpse on Today’s Italy
Given the success of the movie cycles presented in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and thanks to the fruitful collaboration with the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, the Italian Cultural Institute is pleased to present in 2018 a new cycle, A Glimpse on Today’s Italy, which will include movies produced in the last years which wish to illustrate in a rather hironic manner some of the most pressing issues of contemporary Italy.
La seconda notte di nozze (The Second Wedding Night), directed by Pupi Avati, 2005 (103’)
It’s the first years after World War II. Liliana becomes a widow the day after her wedding. Being in financial difficulties, she is forced to leave Bologna together with her son Nino, a professional thief. Liliana writes to Giordano, the brother of her deceased husband, looking for his support. In his welcoming response, Giordano unveils his infatuation for her too, which dates back to their adolescence, way before the wedding with his brother. The two elderly aunts of Giordano are very unhappy with the arrival of Liliana and Nino, and force Giordano to renounce a portion of his inheritance in their favour. After several vicissitudes, Giordano finally manages to marry Liliana, who gives only one condition: that the wedding be “consummated“ only at her request, i.e. on her second wedding night.
