Beyond classics. New Italian Cinema

IT WAS THE SON

The Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Sydney, after the success of the previous movie cycles Masters of Neorealism: Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica in 2015 and Marcello Mastroianni: Lover and Legend in 2016, is pleased to present a new cycle dedicated to Contemporary Italian Cinema. Once more this year we will open a window on Italy through the “Seventh Art” by offering viewers a historical perspective, with Mario Martone’s masterpieces Noi credevamo and Il giovane favoloso, as well as a selection of the best films depicting the genius, the irony and the intensely emotional nature which characterize Italian dramatic comedy, through some of the most recent works by the great Italian directors Daniele Ciprì, Giuseppe Gagliardi, Gianni Amelio and Carlo Mazzacurati, who passed away in January 2014 and whose last film, La sedia della felicità, we propose in this new cycle of screenings.

È stato il figlio, directed by Daniele Ciprì, 2012, 90’.
È stato il figlio by Daniele Ciprì is based on the novel of the same title by Sicilian writer Roberto Alajmo. It is the tale of a family from Parlemo, the Ciraulos, taking place sometime in the future, within a post office. In the movie the initially grotesque reality in which the family lives turns into desperate tragedy. The Ciraulos have tried to fill the void left by a grave loss through the purchase of a material good, which will turn out to be bearer of further misfortune. The head of the family, Nicola (played by Toni Servillo), represents the atavistic hunger of the modern man, whose desire to attain instant gratification ends up condemning his own children.
The film will be subtitled in English
