The Week of the Italian Language in the World is an initiative of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation dedicated to the promotion of the Italian language. The theme chosen for this 22nd edition is L’italiano e i giovani. Come scusa? Non ti followo (Italian and young people. How sorry? I don’t follow you). This title is the result of the competition “Invent the title of SLIM 2022” aimed at public and private Italian schools abroad, organized in order to involve as much as possible young people in the annual event dedicated to the Italian language. Over thirty classes from twenty schools participated in the competition, submitting a total of eighty proposals. The jury of the competition declared the winning title “How sorry? I don’t follow you”. This proposal, presented by the Italian School of Montevideo, has received the greatest number of consents by virtue of its ability to express the renewal of languages through the contribution of digital natives.

Among the events organized in the jurisdiction of the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney, the following should be noted:

The competition Invent a neologism!, launched by the Sydney University, UTS and University of New England, whereby students of Italian have to invent a new word in Italian and provide a short explanation (in Italian) on its meaning and form. The jury will award some prizes to the best works.

The Premio Italia 2022, coordinated every year by the Embassy of Italy in Canberra, on the occasion of which university students of Italian are asked to write a short essay, story or comic in Italian of no more than 1,500 words related to the theme of the week “Italian and young people – How sorry? I don’t follow you”. The prize consists of a AUD 2,000 voucher worth for the purchase of averga return flight ticket to Italy offered by the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney.

The conference Children in the workforce.
