AZZBAND

World music group at the Illawarra Folk Festival and Camelot Lounge

Azzband, an international world music group based in Valladolid, Spain, is touring Australia for the first time and is performing at the Illawarra Folk Festival, held every year in January in Bulli, just outside Wollongong, and at Camelot Lounge in Marrickville, Sydney.

The music project was born in 2008. The band unites musicians from Italy, Venezuela, Australia, Germany and Spain. From jazz to tarantella, tango to fanfare, Uruguayan Candombe to Argentine Murga, Azzband distinctly interprets and mixes the music of the world, presenting songs and music that speak of dreams, journeys and union in what, for most of its members, is a foreign land.

The ensemble uses the improvisation of jazz, attempting nonetheless to stimulate the emotions and imaginations of any type of audience, including one not entirely made of music connoisseurs. That’s why this is not a classic jazz band, but an “Azz Band”. The missing “J” reveals an added quality, one that allows greater freedom of execution, avoiding any reference to a particular musical genre.

salvatore rossanoOne of the founding members of the band is Salvatore Rossano, Italian musician and ethnomusicologist based in Melbourne, also founding member of Santa Taranta, an Italian folk band that performed at the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney in December 2014.

Its stylistic journey is wide and plays with jazz, tarantella, flamenco, murga, waltz, Argentinian tango, Uruguayan candombe, Venezuelan rhythms and even Balkan music … (World Music)
