23rd Week of the Italian Language in the World
On the occasion of the 23rd edition of the Week of the Italian Language in the World (SLIM), announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), the Com.It.Es. of NSW is organizing a round table to offer options, strategies and experiences that can be useful to the many Italian families or those of Italian origin who want to introduce their children to the Italian language. The speakers will discuss strategies that can strengthen the use and transmission of Italian in different social fields, with particular attention to the use of Italian in the family unit. The aim of the meeting will be to stimulate a broad debate on the promotion and teaching of the Italian language, leaving room for questions and contributions from the public.
The event will take place on Wednesday, October 18, from 6pm to 8pm, in the Michael Maher Room at the Haberfield City Library (78 Dalhousie St). The round table is an initiative of Com.It.Es. of NSW, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney, Co.As.It of Sydney and with the patronage of the Consulate General of Italy in Sydney.
Participating in the meeting will be parents, teachers and academics, who will illustrate language maintenance experiences relating to recent and past waves of migration and practices for promoting bilingualism at home, as well as discuss the important role of school and bilingual education, outlining data relating to the presence of Italian and dialect in the NSW community. The event will also be an opportunity to explore the broader context of the use and teaching of Italian in Australia, with particular reference to previous migrations and the use of dialects, specifically in NSW. In this sense, the round table is aimed at all those interested in the teaching of the Italian language in Australia and the strategies that, as a community, we can implement to support its use.
