Design Thinking and Innovation. Where beauty finds its place
Lecture and roundtable on Italian design with Francesco Cavalli, graphic designer and founder of Leftloft (Milan, New York), a graphic design and creative solutions company for brand development and renewal
In view of the growing importance of Italian design, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural and Environmental Heritage and ITA – Italian Trade Agency, has proclaimed the 2nd of March 2017 (just before Milan’s Furniture Fair, 4-9 April 2017) Italian Design Day. According to recent data, Italian design sector generates in its entirety a 46.8 million turnover and employs 995,000 people between direct and indirect activities: in total, it represents 2.9% of national GDP and 4.5% of the workforce. Hence the emphasis given to this important sector of creativity and entrepreneurial spirit Made in Italy.
On this day 100 cities all over the world will host roundtables hosting an “Italian design ambassador” selected among the big names of Italian design, entrepreneurs, critics, academics, communicators and “Under 35” designers. These ambassadors will illustrate the history and the new tendencies of a sector whose accomplishments and planning skills have produced outstanding and unique results.
Upon their return to Italy these “ambassadors” will recommend the results achieved in the country they have visited in the fields of craftsmanship, technological innovations, building methods, materials etc.), share them and verify possibilities of project contaminations.
The Italian design day will not be limited to the roundtable, but in all the cities a video will also be screened illustrating the structure of the project.
The event will be repeated in March 2018 by broadening even further the research and the selection of the production sectors and of the ‘excellences’. A big exhibition will also be organized in 2018 which will feature all the materials collected, the experiences and the possible collaborations that have been established.
The ambassador for the first Italian Design Day in Sydney will be graphic designer Francesco Cavalli.
Francesco Cavalli’s talk will be followed by a roundtable, introduced by Donatella Cannova, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney, and Lisa Cahill, Director of the Australian Design Centre. Participants in the roundtable will be designers Marcus Piper and Catriona Burgess, moderator editor and journalist Penny Craswell.
Francesco Cavalli has 20 years of experience in the field of visual and identity as creative director and strategic designer. He lives and works in Milan, where he founded Leftloft together with his partners while they were studying urban planning at the Politecnico in Milan. Since 1997 the studio has created over 900 projects for local and international clients. From identity to publishing to events‘ curatorship, Francesco has worked for institutions and companies such as Moleskine, dOCUMENTA (13), FC Internazionale, Cassina, Colmar, Subito, and others. In 2009 he temporarily left Milan to establish a new branch in New York. In 2015 he started Luft, a research project within the studio devoted to developing a creative thinking and a collaborative production through design. He has been visiting professor of Visual Design at the Politecnico in Milan. In 2005 he founded the “Ministero della Grafica”, a cultural association for the promotion of Italian graphic design. Since 2017 course leader of the Master Course in Visual Design at Raffles Milano.
Marcus Piper is a self-described digital craftsperson and multidisciplinary designer based on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia.
Known for his ground-breaking art direction of POL Oxygen magazine and having worked for the likes of graphic designer, Neville Brody – he was also the designer of Jaime Hayons’s monograph Jaime Hayon Works. Piper blends the industrial, graphic and photographic mediums through an understanding of analogue and digital processes.
The driving force behind the majority of Australia’s leading design publications over the past 15 years – including his role as editor and creative director of Mezzanine magazine – Piper also has a range of lighting and homewares available through Australian brand, Dessein, and has recently been selected as a finalist in the 2016 mercedes-benz design award.
Cat Burgess

Cat is a highly skilled strategic thinker with more than 30 years’ experience in branding, design and communications.
Her vast knowledge in brand positioning, market analysis, segmentation and research, brand engagement, public affairs and portfolio management helps Frost* develop brands that connect with people and take businesses forward.
Since joining Frost* in 2001, Cat has led numerous high profile national and international branding projects for clients including Qantas, AMP Capital, IAG, Woolworths, Dan Murphy’s , Frasers Property, Mirvac and Foxtel.
She has a particular interest in cultural and destination branding, having spearheaded transformational strategies for the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Living Museums, State Library of NSW, Museum of Australian Democracy, Broken Hill, North Sydney, Sutherland Shire and Canterbury Bankstown.
In 2016 she was appointed to the NSW Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA) Council and she has lectured internationally on brand positioning and place branding.
Cat is passionate about the power of design thinking and its transformational effect on organisations – no matter how large or small.
Penny Craswell is a design writer and editor based in Sydney, Australia. After ten years in publishing as a design magazine editor, including Editor of Artichoke magazine and Deputy Editor of Indesign magazine, Penny worked as Communications Manager at global architecture firm Woods Bagot before concentrating on growing her own business. She contributes to design magazines worldwide, including AR, Mezzanine, Grand Designs Australia, Azure, Frame and Mark magazines. She also runs a communications consultancy business for architects and designers, is finishing a Masters of Design at UNSW and is a writer in residence at the Australian Design Centre.
