In order to resume the commemorations for 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri, widely celebrated around the world during 2021 and to which the Australian Catholic University has already dedicated a very successful event in 2022, the Australian Catholic University, the Italian Cultural Institute and the Consulate General of Italy in Sydney are pleased to renew their collaboration by presenting a new symposium dedicated to the work of the great Florentine poet.

The keynote address, The Poetry of the Divine Comedy and its Challenges for Translators of Dante, will be given by Dr. Simon West of the University of Melbourne. Dr West’s talk will be followed by a response by Prof. Simon Haines (Chief Executive of the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation). Following the keynote address, there will be other presentations by staff and students of the Australian Catholic University.

The Consul General of Italy, Andrea De Felip, will also take part in the event with an introductory greeting, and the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute, Paolo Barlera, will offer a closing commentary.

Dr Simon West is a poet, translator and Italianist. He is the author of four books of poetry and a translation and critical edition of the Italian poet Guido Cavalcanti. He was educated at the University of Melbourne, where he received the Chancellor’s Prize in 2004 for his PhD in Italian Literature. He has lived for long periods in Turin and Rome and returns to Italy frequently. He was a lecturer in Italian studies 2007–2010 at Monash University, and he is now an honorary research fellow in the School of Languages and Linguistics at the University of Melbourne. His most recent book is The Ladder (2015).
