Official presentation of the 7th edition of the Italian Design Day: VIDEO
On March 9th we celebrate the Italian Design Day, an annual initiative offering a wide range of events aimed at promoting Italian design at an international level. On this occasion, the Italian Institute of Culture is pleased to host Dr Alberto Pugnale from The University of Melbourne, who will deliver a presentation on the topic of Artificial Intelligence and architectural design. The event will take place on March 16th 2023 at 6 pm.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is currently used to develop software for various applications, including medical diagnosis, self-driving cars, and speech recognition. The rapid progress made by AI research is transforming a niche field of study into one of the major innovations of the century. The use of AI is also growing in architectural design, particularly in the field of image generation, thanks to the development of tools that can translate natural language into powerful images.
The talk will illustrate possible ways in which AI can be applied in architectural design for scopes beyond the generation of persuasive renders. The aim is to question whether or not AI can simulate mechanisms of human cognition, such as playfulness and analogical reasoning. In other words, can AI design? Is AI creative? Will AI eventually replace human designers?Dr Alberto Pugnale is an Architect and Senior Lecturer in Architectural Design at the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning of The University of Melbourne. He is a co-director of the Advanced Digital Design + Fabrication (ADD+F) Hub and a member of the Steering Committee of the Bioinspiration Hallmark Research Initiative (HRI).
In 2003, he graduated in “Architecture Sciences” (Bachelor level) at Politecnico di Torino. In 2006 he graduated with Honours in “Architecture and Construction” (Master of Science level) at the same university, and in 2010 he got a PhD in “Architecture and Building Design”.
In 2007, he won the IASS HANGAI Prize, an international contest of research papers that are related to the field of shell and spatial structures for young researchers under 30. In 2008 he won a research scholarship granted by the ISI Foundation, Lagrange Project (Turin, Italy), related to the study of complex architectural and structural bodies. During the same year, he won the 3rd prize at the IABSE Photo Contest of Structures, an international competition of photos that exhibit the achievement/art of structural engineering, with the picture of the ‘Jorge Manrique’ footbridge, in Murcia, Spain. From 2010 to 2012, he was Assistant Professor at Aalborg University, Denmark. He has been an invited lecturer in Italy, France, Switzerland, China, Mexico and the United States.
At present, Alberto Pugnale is Senior Lecturer in Architectural Design at the “Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning” of the University of Melbourne as well as a member of the ‘International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures’ (IASS) and of the ‘Society of Architectural Historians Australia and New Zealand’ (SAHANZ). He is also a reviewer for international journals and a member of the Editorial Board of the “Nexus Network Journal” and the “International Journal of Space Structures”.
