“My Italian Connections” series – TWO YOUNG ARTISTS IN ROME

locandina MY ITALIAN CONNECTIONS

For the My Italian Connections series, the Italian Cultural Institute Sydney, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Sydney and the National Art School, is pleased to present a conversation with artists Corey Black and Harry de Vries, both recipients of the prestigious residency at the British School at Rome.

Each year, the National Art School offers an alumnus the opportunity to spend three months at this renowned centre of interdisciplinary research excellence, which supports the full range of arts, humanities and social sciences. Inspired by the remarkable city of Rome, recipients of the residency draw on deep networks, skills and knowledge to develop their own practice, contributing to the cultural and creative dialogues between Italy and Australia.

This event offers a valuable opportunity to explore the lasting impact of Italy on Australian contemporary practice. Through an engaging dialogue, Black and de Vries will reflect on how immersion in Rome’s layered cultural and historical landscape has shaped their research, expanded their methodologies, and facilitated transformative shifts in their artistic work — within what is perhaps the greatest of all European cities.

Corey Black’s practice examines industrial and post-industrial processes, working collaboratively with materials, craftspeople, and machines to generate new formal possibilities while critically engaging with contemporary systems of production, consumption, and technology. His work has been presented nationally and internationally, and he is preparing for a forthcoming residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.

Harry de Vries creates site-specific installations that investigate global flows of people, materials, and power. His practice operates across research, exhibition-making, and institutional engagement. He has undertaken international residencies, lectures at UNSW Art & Design, and works with Firstdraft, one of Australia’s leading contemporary art organisations.
