A TALE OF TWO BEINNALS: SHAZIA IMRAN’S ITALIAN CHAPTER

The Italian Cultural Institute, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Sydney, is pleased to present the cultural series “My Italian connections:  Australian creatives inspired by Italy”

As the first talk in the series: A Tale of Two Biennales: Shazia Imran’s Italian Chapter”.

On 24 July, Australian artist and sculptor Shazia Imran will share her artistic journey through Italy, shaped by two major recognitions: the Lorenzo il Magnifico Award at the Florence Biennale (2015) and First Prize at the Chianciano Biennale (2018).

Known for her evocative mixed-media works, Shazia explores spiritual and emotional themes through layered compositions of watercolours, collage, and textiles. Based in Sydney, she runs her own gallery in the historic district of The Rocks.

During the talk, she will reflect on how Italy has influenced her artistic vision and creative path.

 

Shazia Imran: Australian artist and sculptor, Shazia Imran is best known for her expressive mixed media pieces. She has won many national and international awards including Lorenzo il Magnifico Award at the Florence Biennale 2015, Applied Arts Award at the London Biennale 2017, ‘Most Collectible Artist’ Award at Shenzhen City Art Fair, First prize at the 2018 Chianciano Biennale, 2nd prize International Confederation of Art Critics Award 2019 London Biennale and multiple awards in Australia. Her work has been exhibited internationally and hangs in public and private collections in ­Australia, USA, UK, Italy, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Thailand, China Macau and Singapore. She worked on a large commission project for luxury VIP accommodation, The Mansion, for MGM hotel in Macau. Six of her pieces are in Rajamangala University Thailand’s collection. Her work also has been acquired by His Highness Sheikh Juma Bin Ahmed Bin Juma Al Maktoum. Shazia’s work is sought after internationally and is selling as an investment in Hong Kong and Singapore. She draws her inspiration from her travels, exploring the infinite expressiveness of her subjects through watercolours, acrylics and mixed media. Her delicately multilayered paintings explore the connections between landscape, memory and the subconscious through texture and the interplay of light and dark, creating an atmosphere that opens itself up to multiple meanings.
