PALAZZO FARNESE AND THE LOVES OF THE GODS GALLERY

Palazzo Farnese, a masterpiece begun by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and completed by Michelangelo Buonarroti, opens its doors for an exclusive virtual guided tour.

Once the sumptuous residence of the powerful Farnese family, descendants of Pope Paul III, the palace is a symbol of wealth, ambition, and extraordinary artistic refinement, shaping Italy’s political and cultural life for over two centuries. Today, Palazzo Farnese is the seat of the French Embassy in Italy and preserves a historical and artistic heritage of exceptional value.

During the visit, participants will be able to admire magnificent fresco cycles from the 16th to the 18th century and discover the story of the famous collection of ancient Roman marble once housed in the palace, now largely preserved in the Archaeological Museums of Naples.

The true jewel of the palace is the Farnese Gallery, frescoed by the Carracci brothers on commission from Cardinal Odoardo Farnese. Inspired by the Loves of the Gods, this extraordinary fresco cycle is considered the first great masterpiece of Roman Baroque and marks a pivotal turning point in the history of European painting.

This tour inaugurates an exclusive series of seven virtual guided tours exploring the wonders of Italy: a fascinating journey through art, history, and myth, beginning with the splendour and artistic innovation of Palazzo Farnese. An expert accredited guide will accompany participants through an immersive online (Zoom) experience, discovering some of Italy’s most iconic sites, artists, and cultural heritage all from the comfort of home.
