SUMI-E practical workshop with artist Mauro De Giorgi

sumi e paintingSUMI-E is the Japanese word for Black Ink Painting. Emphasis lays on the beauty of each individual stroke of the brush and the ability to capture the spirit (Ch’i) of nature rather than a photographic likeness.

During the workshop, led by Italian artist Mauro De Giorgi, students will be introduced to the “Four Treasures” (The ink stick, the ink stone, brush and paper). The workshop will begin with a practical demonstration followed by guided instruction to the four basic strokes.

Students will learn:

  • The four traditional Sumi-e brush stroke techniques: pulling, pressure, side & smooshing.
  • How to use the Four Treasures: Ink, brush, ink stone and paper
  • How to paint bamboos, with an emphasis on the shape of the leaves and the stem.
  • Some Japanese Zen concepts and how to apply these to their own compositions.

Learning outcomes:

  • Reduce – Get to the core. Become essential. The simplicity of working only in mauro goofy with brushgreyscale allows you to focus on the brush strokes.
  • Focus — Be in the present. Be alert. Since the ink is permanent, each stroke must be made with intention and thought.
  • Express — Find your style. Be unique. Do you like looser brushstrokes? More details? Make it your own.

No experience on paint with ink necessary, all levels are welcome. Course materials will be provided. Sumi is a Zen activity and the emphasis is on the process!
