NEWS: Upcoming dates for the CILS (Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language) exams

Would you like to certify your knowledge of Italian?

The Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Sydney will host the certification exams for levels B1 and B2 on 16 June 2026.

REGISTRATION OPEN FROM 7 APRIL TO 6 MAY 2026

The registration deadline is set by the Università per Stranieri di Siena and is therefore non-negotiable.

How to register

To register, you must send the following documents to the language course coordinators of the Institute:

Required documents:

The CILS application form completed in capital letters: name, place, and date of birth must match exactly those on your identity document (if you have previously taken a CILS exam, include your registration number).

A clear photocopy of a valid identity document (passport or ID card).

Fees

After submitting your application and ID document, you will receive an email with instructions on how to pay the exam fee.

Do not make any payment before receiving the confirmation email.

Together with the confirmation email, you will also receive confirmation that the exam will take place. Exams will be held only if a minimum of 6 candidates per level is reached.

The exams will take place at the Institute’s premises (4/125 York Street, Sydney CBD) on a single day.

Exam results

Results will be published approximately 2 to 4 months after the exam date.

You can check your results on the website of the Università per Stranieri di Siena by entering your registration number and date of birth.

Candidates are strongly advised to keep their registration number, which will be provided on the day of the exam.

If you do not pass part of the exam

If a section of the CILS exam is not passed, candidates may retake it in a subsequent session within 18 months of the first exam date.

Accessibility

IMPORTANT: Candidates with specific needs (e.g., physical or cognitive disabilities) are requested to inform us at the time of registration and provide medical documentation.

The Institute will contact the CILS Centre, which—after reviewing the documentation—will communicate the appropriate procedures for conducting the exam.
