Doing business in Australia with a made in Italy human capital

Roundtable led by Prof. Massimiliano Tani, Professor of Finance, School of Business, UNSW Canberra

The roundtable will concentrate on the topic: new entrepreneurs and local culture. During the evening some Italian businesspeople will share their impression on the way business is done and on marketing strategies in Australia vs Italy, with a special focus on the importance of understanding local customs from a business point of view, and the necessity of finding human capital capable of operating as a bridge between the two cultures.

After a brief introduction by Prof. Massimiliano Tani, who will talk about the concept of ‘human capital’, the panel speakers will illustrate their experiences as Italian entrepreneurs in Australia. Guests at the roundtable discussion are: Federico Bettini (Aizoon Australia), Giovanni Nizzi (MaxMara), Andrea Zannier (Oliver Wyman) and Joseph Crepaldi (Crescendo Partners and Crown Resorts) and Yvonne Buchreiter (Brand Manager of Autosports Group – Lamborghini Sydney).

max taniMassimiliano (Max) Tani graduated with a PhD in Economics from the Australian National University (Canberra, Australia), a MSc Econ from the London School of Economics (1992) and a Laurea from Bocconi University (1989). He currently works as a professor in the School of Business at the University of New South Wales (Canberra). Before moving to Australia in 1999, Max worked for a decade in investment banking (Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan Chase). His research work and interests centre on skills and skilled international migration, innovation and mobility, the labour market for graduates, and higher education. Max is a member of the permanent committee of Italian scientists abroad, research associate at IZA (Institut zur Zukunft der Arbeit, Bonn), fellow of the Marie Curie Association (European Union), and a founding member of the Association for Research between Italy and Australasia (ARIA), Canberra.

Andrea Zannier is a Partner at Oliver Wyman’s Sydney office. Andrea joined Oliver Wyman in 2014, having previously spent a number of years as a line manager with Macquarie Bank and Citibank. Andrea’s strategic consulting experience was matured at BCG Milan and McKinsey Sydney. Andrea has also driven the launch and development of a M&A boutique in London.

Federico Bettini arrived in Australia more than 10 years ago. He holds a Phd and currently serves as the CEO of Aizoon Australia. Aizoon is an innovation technology company specialized in cyber security, Industry 4.0 and Big Data analytics. Federico worked for various multinationals and his last role was as Procurement Director for Lion Co.

Before moving to Sydney in 2015, Giovanni Nizzi acted as Intellectual Property Specialist for the MaxMara Fashion Group. Subsequently, he started overviewing the Central/Eastern Europe and Japan markets for MaxMara in his capacity of Export Area Manager. Giovanni is currently managing the retail and wholesale distribution of the MaxMara Group, which counts over 20 directly operated boutiques between NSW, VIC, QLD and SA.

Joseph Crepaldi is Managing Director of Crescendo Partners and Chief Revenue Officer of Crown Resorts. He has 25 years of consulting experience to large scale corporations worldwide. He possesses strong expertise in the areas of growth (including M&A), international expansion and FMCGs Direct management and Board experience in gambling, fashion, online and media companies.
