Beyond classics. New Italian Cinema

Beyond classics. New Italian Cinema

La sedia della felicità, directed by Carlo Mazzacurati, 2013, 90’.

La sedia della felicità is Carlo Mazzacurati's last work, by many considered his cinematic last will. Indeed, the movie somehow detaches itself from the at times dark and bitter attitude of the director, to depict once again existential contradictions, this time illustrated in a dynamic comedy. The main characters, played by Valerio Mastandrea and Isabella Ragonese, stage an exuberant version of the 1928 Russian novel The twelve chairs, written by Il'ja Arnol'dovič Il'f ed Evgenij Petrovič Petrov. A treasure hidden in a chair becomes the starting point of the adventurous tale of a beautician and a tattoo artist who fall in love during their search. A mysterious priest (Giuseppe Battiston) seems to be, at the beginning, a threat for the couple, but he later becomes a friend and an ally. The comedy, which takes place with Veneto’s landscapes in the background, turns out to be surreal, and gaiety and humour are the hallmarks of this happy ending story.
