Italian Design meets Fashion and Jewellery

Lecture by Prof.ssa Alba Cappellieri, Professor of Design of Jewellery and of Fashion Accessory at the Politecnico di Milano and Director of the Museum of Jewellery in Vicenza

On the occasion of the 2nd Italian Design Day, dedicated to the relationship between design and sustainability and to the promotion of the 22nd Milan Triennale, which will be held in 2019, the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney is pleased to host a lecture by Prof. Alba Cappellieri, professor of Design of Jewellery at the Politecnico di Milano. The evening will also see the participation or Architect Arturo Dell’Acqua Bellavitis, President of the Fondazione Museo del Design at the Milan Triennale and Professor of Industrial Design at the School of Design at the Politecnico di Milano, of which he is Head.

The first Italian Design Day was held in 2017 under the auspices of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International italian design day logoCooperation in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural and Environmental Heritage and ITA – Italian Trade Agency. On this day 100 cities all over the world will host roundtables hosting an “Italian design ambassador” selected among the big names of Italian design, entrepreneurs, critics, academics, communicators and “Under 35” designers. These ambassadors will illustrate the history and the new tendencies of a sector whose accomplishments and planning skills have produced outstanding and unique results. The theme selected for 2018 is Design and Sustainability – “Broken Nature”.

Contemporary jewellery is pluralistic, since it is an hovering object: between several disciplines – art, fashion, industrial design, craftmanship, sociology, anthropology, religion – between conflicting times – eternity and ephemeral – but, most of all, between heterogeneous values. Tangible values on one hand, linked to the value of the materials and to the symbolic or exchange values, and, on the other, to the intangible and narrative values. Among the wearable items interacting with our lives and bodies, jewellery is one of the most reluctant and static: production techniques and materials are the same as in the past, and so are shapes and typologies. The most innovative contribution to jewellery comes from design, in terms of aesthetics and of values. The lecture will present the major jewellery contexts with a focus on the Italian fashion jewellery in terms sustainability and will highlight the role of the Italian design principles in innovating Italian jewellery, changing consumption behaviours, bridging meanings and introducing new scenarios.
