Italian and the Network. Poetry and Contemporary Reality

Lecture by poet Maria Boriosli logo

18th Week of the Italian Language in the World: Italian and the network, networks for Italian

On the occasion of the 18th Week of the Italian Language in the World, whose theme this year is Italian and the network, networks for Italian, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura is pleased to host a lecture by Italian poet and literary critic Maria Borio.

Does the relationship between poetry and contemporary lead us to calibrate the weight of what can produce vision with respect to seriality and aseptic technique? At least since the year 2000, art lives of hybrids and contaminations, but above all of attitudes for which non-fiction has increasingly corroded fiction and the chronicle of the self has corrupted the body of lyric poetry. Does art today pose the problem of a vision, an imaginary? Reflecting on poetry means piercing the superficial crust of referentiality, which claims to illustrate life in objective documentaries, and of narcissistic self-referentiality; to think that a work does not function like a screen, a network, where the data of what happens or what is heard are transcribed, but as a relationship field. Not reality as an objective situation, but the experience of reality, not just a real thing, but a lived, authentic one. Can the energy of an experience that modifies itself, opens up, speaks, make us discover a new idea of humanism? Can the relationship between poetry and contemporary produce the experience of a human cosmos?

Born in 1985, Maria Borio is a poet and a literary critic. She holds a BA and a PhD in Italian literature. She has written on the poetry of Vittorio Sereni and Eugenio Montale, and published the monograph Da Montale alla lirica contemporanea (2013) as well as monography Satura. Da Montale alla lirica contemporanea (Serra 2013). Her poems have been published in several journals and literary websites. A selection of her works entitled Vite Unite was included in «XII Quaderno di poesia italiana contemporanea» (Marcos y Marcos 2015). She is the editor of the poetry section of the journal «Nuovi Argomenti», previously directed by Alberto Moravia and Pier Paolo Pasolini.
