Ballerina

Vivid Sydney 2019

The Italian Cultural Institute is pleased to present to the members, friends and supporters the Turin artist Angelo Bonello, who will participate with the Ballerina installation at the Vivid Sydney 2019 festival, which will be held this year between May 24th and June 15th on Sydney Harbor. The artwork will be visible until June 15th HERE

Ballerina is a tribute to the dream of all little girl who, through movement and art, aspires to reach infinity. The artwork reproduces, in a light sequence of 20 silhouettes, the hypnotic cycle of a ballet, in sync with its soundtrack. The observer is attracted to this gigantic carillon by some features that will draw his attention. The stroboscopic effect recalls the sequence of shots in a photographic memory, made of meaningful visions, even if never completely perceptible. The relationship with the rhythm of the music resembles the elegance and softness of a real dance, while the cyclic nature recalls infinity as a repetition of desires, never ending love, eternal sunshine and life. In this dreamlike context Ballerina keeps repeating steps and pirouettes, without ever stopping, almost oblivious to the urban context, into the glares of the sea, in the gentle hug of the city.

artist profileAngelo Bonello was born in Turin. He has been interested in painting and sculpture since childhood under the guidance of Impressionist artist Sergio Manfredi. Later he met artist Antonio Carena, from whom he learnt the abstract and conceptual arts before landing on the shores of Techno-Art with artist Piero Gilardi. At the same time he spent his early years on a long journey of discovery of nature, culture and art. While studying, he explores forests, climbs mountains and discovers and lives the big cities, like Beijing, Bogota, Dubai, Rio de Janeiro. At the same time, he is interested in figurative and abstract arts, mountaineering and the new circus, performing and multimedia arts. Angelo Bonello conceives the urban space as a large stage hosting environmental performances and light installations perfectly integrated with the landscape. In 1997 he settled in Rome, where he met Alberta Nunziante, and they found Kitonb Project together. He keeps exploring the most uninhabited corners of the world, yet Rome is where he imagines and creates more than 150 projects, carried out in 40 countries all around the world. His artworks have been presented at numerous international light festivals, with light installations in Amsterdam, Toronto, Lausanne and Washington, and the recently concluded I Light Singapore Festival with his “Run Beyond”.
