Lavazza Italian Film Festival 2019

On the occasion of the 20th Lavazza Italian Film Festival, which will start on the 17th of September in Sydney, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Sydney, in collaboration with Palace Cinemas, is pleased to present the Australian première of Aspromonte, la terra degli ultimi (Aspromonte, Land of the Forgotten). Special guest on the first screening, taking place on the 18th of September at the Verona Cinema in Paddington, will be the movie director, Mimmo Calopresti, whose presence has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura and the Controluce association.

At the end of the 1950s in Africo, a small village in the southern valley of Aspromonte, a woman dies in childbirth because a doctor fails to arrive on time. No road connects Africo with the other villages. In the wake of this tragedy, all of Africo’s citizens -including children – abandon their usual occupations and unite to build their own road. Giulia (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi), the new schoolteacher, comes from the North with a mission to teach standard Italian to help bring cultural cohesion with Africo and the rest of Italy. But she will have to contend with the local mafioso Don Totó (Sergio Rubini), who is determined to ensure this the town remains cut off, and thus, under his power.

Aspromonte, Land of the Forgotten is the tribute Mimmo Calopresti and its producer calopresti 2Fulvio Lucisano wish to offer to their Calabrian origins, and each scene derives from a deep attachment to their roots and a genuine love for their own country.
