The singing body

Workshop of songs from Salento with Enza Pagliara and Dario Muci

The Istituto Italiano di Cultura, in collaboration with the Associazione Puglia in Sydney, is pleased to announce the visit of extraordinary artists from Salento, Enza Pagliara and Dario Muci, who are visiting Australia to take part in the Melbourne Taranta Festival (11-15 March 2020).

On Wednesday, 18 March 2020, the Associazione Puglia in Leichhardt will host a workshop of songs from Salento led by the two pagliara muci 1musicians from Puglia. The workshop is open to all those who are interested in letting themselves be ‘traversed’ by singing, welcoming the sounds of the earth to evoke a musical culture that bases one of its greatest pleasures on sharing, on creating together, each one with their own voice, an entire story.

Attendees will refine listening as their first learning tool, they will learn how to listen not only with their ears, but with the whole body. They will let themselves be ‘traversed’ by sounds, they will seek their own voice to awaken it, clean it up and then free it as a primary expression of life and joy. They will reappropriate their own memory, trust it, listen and believe in it, take back the words and the sounds of the oral tradition as an instrument of individual and collective identity.

In the laboratory, the songs will be learnt in a "traditional" way. The learning tools which Enza and Dario will use are listening and memory.

Among the most representative voices of Puglia, with longstanding, high profile artistic careers, Enza Pagliara and Dario Muci perform long forgotten songs that they themselves have collected from the living voices of the singers of Salento. They interpret and combined them with their own stories, recreating the wonderful vitality of the past against the background of the present. A repertoire of traditional songs for voices, tambourines and guitar that combines the old with the new, the feminine with the masculine.
