4th Italian Design Day

logo italian design dayOn the occasion of the 4th Italian Design Day the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney and Melbourne, in collaboration with ITA (Italian Trade Commission) have invited Silvia Micheli, architect and architectural historian as well as Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, and Paolo Stracchi, architectural engineer and Lecturer in Architectural Technology at the University of Sydney, to present a webinar whose common title is Three Myths and a Ghost. Giurgola, Taglietti, Piano and Nervi. The enduring success of the Italian contribution to the Australian architecture.

The first Italian Design Day was held in 2017 under the auspices of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural and Environmental Heritage and ITA – Italian Trade Agency. On this day globally the Offices that are part of the so called Sistema Paese will host events hosting an “Italian design ambassador” selected among the big names of Italian design, entrepreneurs, critics, academics, communicators and “Under 35” designers. These ambassadors will illustrate the history and the new tendencies of a sector whose accomplishments and planning skills have produced outstanding and unique results.

Silvia Micheli’s talk, Italy/Australia, will focus on the book Italy/Australia: Postmodern Architecture in Translation, which she co-edited. The book reflects on how Italian postmodern architecture was received in Australia, revealing a richness of original responses and interpretations. Dedicated to the memory of Romaldo Giurgola and completed by a poem by Enrico Taglietti, the book adds to the ongoing discourse on European influences on Australian culture and represents a collective attempt to initiate a first critical assessment of national postmodern architecture.

Paolo Stracchi’s talk, Nutella, Campari and Concrete, on the other hand, will illustrate the ‘oxymoron’ of the Italian industrial-craftsmanship and the enduring success of the products of Italian design that from the early Sixties began to appear on the Australian market.

Silvia Micheli, an architect and architectural historian, is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture at the University of micheliQueensland in Brisbane, Australia. Silvia Micheli’s research investigates global architecture and cross-cultural exchanges in the 20th and 21st century architectural context. She has a range of collaborations with international institutions, including the Alvar Aalto Foundation (Helsinki), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Vitra Design Museum (Weil am Rhein), and MAXXI Museum (Rome).

stracchiPaolo Stracchi is an architectural engineer and Lecturer in Architectural Technology at the School of Architecture, Design and Planning of the University of Sydney. His research work investigates on the seamless relationship between architecture and construction, and on historical construction methods and speculative design upon the same. Paolo has practised extensively as a Project Designer in Italy and Australia and attained a PhD in Architecture and Construction from the University of Rome Tor Vergata.

The conference will be introduced by Dr Paola Favaro, coordinator of Postgraduate Research at the Faculty of Built Environment at the University of NSW.
