Celebration for the 100th anniversary of Federico Fellini’s birth

The second movie presented within the Fellini Retrospective organized by the Italian Cultural Institute in collaboration with Randwick Ritz Cinema on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great master of Italian cinema is La strada (1952).

The retrospective, organised by the Ritz Cinema, immediately found the enthusiastic participation of the IIC who has engaged the expertise of Christian Pazzaglia to open the series and introduce six of the eight titles listed in the program. The public will be invited to interact with Pazzaglia at the end of the screening through Q&A sessions.

Cast: Anthony Quinn, Giulietta Masina, Richard Basehart, Aldo Silvani

Plot: When Gelsomina, a naïve young woman, is purchased from her impoverished mother by brutish circus strongman Zampanò to be his wife and partner, she loyally endures her husband's coldness and abuse as they travel the Italian countryside performing together. Soon Zampanò must deal with his jealousy and conflicted feelings about Gelsomina when she finds a kindred spirit in Il Matto, the carefree circus fool, and contemplates leaving Zampanò.

The movie won an Oscar in 1954 as Best Foreign Language Film.
