Lucca Project Contest – Giovanni Martinelli Prize

Exhibition of works by the winners of the “Lucca Comics & Games“ Competition

20th Week of the Italian Language in the World

Italian between words and images: graffiti, illustrations, comics

lucca crea 1Each year the Italian language is celebrated worldwide during the Week of the Italian Language in the World, an initiative of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation which in 2020 has reached its 20th edition. This year's theme is Italian between words and images: graffiti, illustrations, comics.

As part of the initiatives organized for this annual event, the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney will host an exhibition dedicated to the 15 finalists of the Lucca Project Contest 2020 and the project by the winner of the 2019 competition.

The Lucca Project Contest is a national competition open to aspiring comic book authors, organized by Lucca Comics & Games, and now in its 16th year. Every year, about 200 young authors submit their projects to a jury composed by comics professionals who will choose among them 15 finalists. The winning project will be officially published by Edizioni BD, publishing partner of the Project Contest. Most of the previous Project Contest winners and finalists are now established professionals. Over the years, the Project Contest has established itself as a privileged observation point on the state of the art of young Italian creativity, and therefore on the state of health of Italian comics in general. lucca crea 2

In 2020 Lucca Crea has established a collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and thanks to this collaboration the exhibition will be circulated within the Italian diplomatic-consular network, which will in turn make it available to all universities and foreign institutions where Italian is taught who will request it.

Lucca Crea will also provide a multilingual web platform on which some webinars held by the finalists of the 2020 competition will be available in Italian and English.

The works will remain on display until the 31st of March 2021, and visitors will be able to view the exhibition as soon as the restrictions related to the Covid-19 emergency are relaxed and the Institute will be able to open to the public again.
