Screening of MALENA by Giuseppe Tornatore

malenaWith a music tribute to Ennio Morricone

ST. ALi Italian Film Festival 2020

The final event of the 21st Italian Film Festival, which will start on 29 September 2020 in Sydney, will be the screening, on 18 October at the Chauvel cinema in Paddington, of the acclaimed film by Giuseppe Tornatore Malena, already presented at the Lavazza Italian Film Festival in 2000 and celebrating this year its 20th anniversary.

Malena tells the story of a boy’s transition from adolescence to maturity against the backdrop of WWII. In 1941 Renato (Giuseppe Sulfaro) is 13 years old and almost nothing happens in his quiet Sicilian town. Malena (a ravishing morriconeMonica Bellucci) is the most beautiful woman in town, and because of the admiration she stirs in all the men in town, she attracts the jealousy of her wives and becomes the victim of poisonous gossip. However, only his most ardent admirer, Renato, will find out about her mysterious past.

Malena‘s soundtrack was composed by the great and recently deceased Ennio Morricone, who composed the music for 13 Tornatore films starting from 1988. To commemorate the recent passing of the great composer, the screening of Malena on 18 October at the logo festival 2020 sitoChauvel cinema in Paddington will be preceded by a musical tribute to Ennio Morricone, sadly departed in July 2020. The musical tribute will be presented by a quartet directed by Maestro Francesco Celata, associate principal clarinet at the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and clarinet teacher at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
