FAITH by Valentina Pedicini

FAITH by Valentina Pedicini

Antenna Selects 2021

As is known, the 2020 edition of the Antenna Documentary Film Festival, with which the Italian Cultural Institute has been collaborating for years, has suffered a setback due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the Festival has launched a series of screenings under the title Antenna Select, and in March 2021 it will present a documentary with a very interesting content, Faith, by Italian director Valentina Pedicini, who died prematurely last November 20 at the age of 42.

“Warrior Monks” and “Guardian Mothers” they call themselves, the martial arts champions who are members of an Italian sect living monacotogether in a monastery. Led by a Kung Fu master, they are like Shaolin monks with of Catholic faith. Totally immersed in their religious beliefs, they train constantly so they are able to combat evil in the name of the Father. Director Valentina Pedicini was granted access to a way of life defined by discipline, and the resulting black-and-white film is surprisingly intimate. The shaven-headed warriors (men, women and children) rarely step beyond the walls of their monastery, a place that becomes a new family for all those who accept to enter this new world made of sacrifices, purity, and prayer. Interpersonal relationships are warm and sincere, but the members of the community turn into real warriors when they train their body following very strict oriental practices. Its members hold no secrets from each other or from the camera. It is truly amazing how Valentina Pedicini, through her interesting and austere black and white narration, managed to capture the essence of this place and the people who share this experience.

valentinaBorn in Brindisi in 1978, Valentina Pedicini moved to Rome in her teens to attend university, and subsequently moved to Bolzano to attend ZeLIG, a school specialized in documentary filmmaking. Her first work was the documentary Dal profondo (From the Depths) about a woman called Patrizia who was the only – and the last – female miner in Italy. In 2017 Valentina debuted as a feature film director with Dove cadono le ombre (Where the Shadows Fall), a drama set in a Swiss nursing home inspired by the persecution of Roma and Sinti populations in Switzerland. Valentina died on November 20, 2020 at the end of a short illness, undoubtedly having still a brilliant career ahead of her.
