dante700 positivoA three-part musical journey through Hell, Purgatory and Heaven

On the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death, KLASSIK underground & the Italian Cultural Institute Sydney presents MusicandoDante: A three-part musical journey through Hell, Purgatory and Heaven.

This journey, filmed in the underground Moritzbastei cultural centre in Leipzig in Germany, will be told through a symbiosis of chamber music, performed by musicians of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, while Italian actress and musician Rebecca Viora recites three original Canti of the Divine Comedy.

The three concerts, originally of the duration of one hour each, now reduced to 12 minutes each, will join the expressive interaction of the musical language of Shostakovich, Kurtág, Ligeti, Hindemith, and Brahms with Dante’s verses. The emotional and expressive nature of the performances will be further heightened by Tilo Baumgärtel’s video installation, inspired by William Blake’s 102 illustrations based on the Divine Comedy.

At the end of the performance, we will connect live with musician and producer Thalia Petrosian from Germany and actress Rebecca Viora from Italy.
