ST. ALi Italian Film Festival

Palace Cinemas, Sydney

Now in its 22nd year, the ST. ALi Italian Film Festival presented by Palace Cinemas returns to cinema screens across all the major Australian cities in October/November, presenting the best of contemporary Italian cinema as well as some classics. In Sydney the Festival will run between 28 October and 21 November.

rosselliniThis year the Festival will present, in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Sydney, a retrospective dedicated to Italian director Roberto Rossellini, one of the greatest directors in Italian film history and pivotal in the post-war rebirth of Italian cinema.
Rossellini’s realistic style strongly influenced the development of important talents, including Federico Fellini and Martin Scorsese, and he became known as "the father of the French New Wave".

The retrospective includes the screening on the closing night of his anti-fascist movie Rome, Open City (1945) starring Anna Magnani, Federico Fellini and Aldo Fabrizi, which won the Grand Prize at Cannes Film Festival; the neo-realist classic, Paisà (1946), for which he was nominated for a screen-writing Oscar in 1950; the 'transitional’ film L’Amore, featuring an extraordinary performance by Anna Magnani; Stromboli (1950), which marked the beginning of his collaboration and love relationship with Ingrid Bergman, and finally his masterpiece Journey to Italy (1954)

The Italian Film Festival was inaugurated in 2000 by Antonio Zeccola, founder of Palacelacci Cinemas, whose mission has been over the years the presentation and distribution in Australia of quality cinema, as well as dedicating regular annual events to the most interesting and successful movies of the international cinema production. Throughout the years the Italian Film Festival has attracted an ever-growing audience of over 80,000 people attending nationally.

The Institute's members will be entitled to a discount on the entry fee.
