viva dante 70021st Week of the Italian Language in the World

The Week of the Italian Language in the World has reached its 21st edition, and this year, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the death of the Supreme Poet Dante Alighieri, is entitled Dante, l’italiano. The event is organized by MAECI with the collaboration for the linguistic promotion of public and private bodies (Ministry of Univesity and Reasearch, MIBACT, Accademia della Crusca, Dante Alighieri Society, Embassy of Switzerland, RAI, Treccani and CGIE) and involves the entire Italian diplomatic network with all the actors of the country system.

The Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney has been collaborating locally for years with the universities within its jurisdiction in setting up events that, in 2021, will take place from the 18th to the 23rd of October. Among the other participating universities, the Victoria University of Wellington has been especially active through the collaboration of Prof. Marco Sonzogni.

For this edition dedicated to Dante, the IIC and the VUW have created the VideoDante700 event: three New Zealand video makers, Shu Run Yap, Ehsan Hazaveh and Alfio Leotta, have created three videos containing readings focused on the Dante’s Divine Comedy. Three New Zealand poets, Anahera Gildea, Bill Manhire ed Emalani Case, will recite on video the last terzine (triplets) of the three cantiche Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso, with iconic New Zealand locations in the background.
