21st Week of the Italian Language in the World – Dante, l’italiano

21st Week of the Italian Language in the World – Dante, l’italiano

viva dante 700Event Program

The Week of the Italian Language in the World is an initiative of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation dedicated to the promotion of the Italian language. The theme chosen for this 21st edition is Dante, l’italiano, as 2021 marks the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death, which is celebrated all over the world, including Australia, with a myriad of cultural initiatives and events.

For the occasion, the Italian Cultural Institute has produced, despite the current lockdown, a rich program of cultural events involving all the Departments of Italian present in its jurisdiction, and in particular: the University of Sydney, the University of Wollongong, Macquarie University, UTS, University of New England and Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand). A competition has also been launched for the creation of videos inspired by the Divine Comedy called RecitaDante2021, aimed at students of Italian, as well as a theatrical and musical event entitled MusicandoDante, which sees the participation of an Italian actress, Rebecca Viola, and of an ensemble led by Australian musician Thalia Petrosian. The Institute has also created with Prof. Marco Sonzogni an educational exhibition on the life and works of the Supreme Poet entitled DanteinPillole, which will be exhibited in various locations and which will see the participation of the artist Thomas Campi with his drawing dedicated to theme. Again in New Zealand, three young local filmmakers will create video entitled VideoDante, in which three young New Zealand poets will recite Dante Alighieri in three iconic locations of Wellington. The week will close with the annual National Conference of Australian Teachers of Italian, organized with Co.As.It under the auspices of the Italian Embassy in Canberra.
