banglaA lieto fine - Happy ending

2021 marks the 7th consecutive year of the Italian Cultural Institute’s fruitful collaboration with the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, i.e. the cultural hub of the Liverpool City Council. A collaboration that is expressed with the organization of the screening of movies focussing on contemporary Italian productions.

This year’s movie series is called A lieto fine - Happy ending, with a clear reference to the choice of "light" feature films, not particularly challenging, which want to herald a gradual resumption of all economic and cultural activities, which have unavoidably slowed down and/or have been confined to private settings due to the Covid pandemic.

(Phaim Buyan, 2019, 84’)

Cast: Phaim Bhuiyan, Carlotta Antonelli, Simone Liberati:

The lead character - and the director - Phaim is a second-generation immigrant from Bangladesh, born in Rome, and an Italian citizen. Phaim and his Bangla friends speak so deeply the local language they could have been Romans for generations. But life isn't simple, juggling a job as a Museum warden, a family adhering to cultural traditions, a religion with strict principles, and a brand-new girlfriend. The movie, set in the Roman suburb of Torpignattara, is in the end a witty romantic comedy.

The movie will be introduced by Dr Cristiana Palmieri.

Cristiana Palmieri is a senior executive in medical education. She is also researchphaim affiliate at the School of Languages and Cultures, University of Sydney, where she completed her doctorate in Sociolinguistics and Adult Education. Her main research interests are motivation for language learning in multicultural and multilingual contexts. Along with numerous papers she has published “Identity Trajectories of Adult Second Language Learners: Learning Italian in Australia”. Cristiana is passionate about cinema and collaborates as film critic and movie journalist with FRED Film Radio, a web radio based in London that covers films festivals and cinema globally.
