A sculpture by the Italian artist Leonardo Cumbo has been selected for the Sculpture by the Sea international exhibition, which will begin next October 21 and will end on November 7 in Sydney.

Inaugurated with Maurizio Perron’s Paper Boats and continued with Silvia Tuccimei’s voluminous stainless steel installations, the collaboration between Sculpture by the Sea and the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney is well-established, has been going on for a decade and after a two-years break caused by the pandemic, it is renewed again this year to bring the works of the artist from Caltanissetta (Sicily) to Australia.

Sculpture by the Sea, founded in 1997, can be considered one of the largest exhibitions in the world, with works from 5 continents, which attracts the attention of international critics, with very high attendance of the public. For the event, which is held every year along the coastal promenade between Bondi and Tamarama, Leonardo Cumbo created three sculptures: a large sculpture for the external exhibition entitled Trap for dreams and two small ones for the Sculpture inside exhibition entitled Dreaming to fly no. 1 and Dreaming to fly no. 2.

Leonardo Cumbo (Caltanissetta, 1967) in 1985 obtained the Scientific High School Diploma. From 1986 to 1990 he studied Medicine and Surgery. After leaving his scientific studies, in 1990 he attended the Art League Students’ School in New York. In 1993 he obtained the Diploma in Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo and the following year the Maturity of Applied Art. From 1994 to 2006 he taught in the regional and state Art High Schools in the provinces of Palermo and Caltanissetta. From 2006 to 2007 he taughtleonardo cumbo “Ornamental Plastic” at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin and Decoration and “Sculpture Techniques” at the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania. Winner of important National and International Awards and Competitions, he has participated in Contemporary Art events around the world, enjoying success and flattering awards from critics, the public and the art market. Among the latest most important participations we mention: the Ube Biennale, Japan, 2019; the International Exhibition of Contemporary Sculpture 2016, Miyazaki, Japan, 2016; the International EXPO of Milan, Rho, 2015; International EXPO, Zaragoza, 2008. He has created monumental sculptures for public spaces in Italian cities (Agrigento, Ascoli Piceno, Avellino, Cagliari, Caltanissetta, Catania, Catanzaro, Cosenza, Enna, Macerata, Messina, Naples, Palermo, Rome, Syracuse, Teramo, Trapani, Viterbo) and abroad (Yamaguchi (Japan), Yukuhashi (Japan), Zaragoza (Spain), Antalya (Turkey), Berlin (Germany) Huesca (Spain), Kirikkale (Turkey). He organized, coordinated and directed Sculpture Symposiums and International Contemporary Art Exhibitions in Italy. A multifaceted artist, he is passionate about research and experimentation in multiple fields of the visual arts. His artistic activity ranges from sculpture to photography, from painting to engraving, from graphics and video-installation. He loves to use the most disparate materials and techniques, always arriving at original technical-expressive and formal solutions without, however, ever compromising the recognition of his own style and personal language. Irony and Paradox constitute the leitmotif of almost all of his artistic production.
