WICIP – Women in Italian Cinema, an Inclusive Project

wicip logoWICIP (Women in Italian Cinema, an Inclusive Project) is the first international project aimed at promoting Italian cinema written, produced, and directed by women, available in an accessible version, supported by the Italian Ministry of Culture. Its primary objective is to spotlight female talent in Italian cinema and promote Women’s Empowerment. WICIP’s goal is also to emphasize the importance of making films accessible to people with sensory disabilities according to the inclusivity standards now followed in many countries around the world. Thus, all the films will be fully accessible, with subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing and audio description for the blind and visually impaired, which will be downloadable onto viewers’ smartphones.

After the first remote event in March 2022 in collaboration with ICFF – Italian Contemporary Film Festival in Toronto, the selected films are travelling across the continents, taking Italian women’s cinema around the world, from Europe to South and North America and Australia.

The Australian leg of the screenings will take place at the Ritz Cinema in Randwick (Sydney) on the 10th and 11th December 2022. WICIP in Australia is organized in partnership with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, with the support of NIAWA (National Italian Australian Women’s Association), the Dante Alighieri Society and Moving Story (Cinema Ritz).

The Sydney programme includes 6 films: two features (La ragazza ha volato by Wilma Labate and Le sorelle Macaluso by Emma Dante), two documentaries (Corpo a corpo by Maria Iovine and Faith by Valentina Pedicini) and two short films (Being My Mom by Jasmine Trinca and Il Moro by Daphne Di Cinto).

We are sorry to inform you that due to logistical problems, the panel scheduled for Saturday, 10 December, at 12 noon has been cancelled.

A panel discussion entitled Accessible Filmmaking. How to make films accessible to anyone with the participation of filmmakers who adopt the concept of Accessible Filmmaking, users and representatives of sensory disabled associations will be held in spring 2023.These panels will offer an invaluable opportunity for a true exchange of ideas among women authors, researchers, and producers of different nationalities, as well as a chance to develop joint production projects and/or lay the foundation for specific studies.

WICIP films are also made accessible to the hearing and visually impaired. SDH (Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing) and AD (Audio Description for the Blind and Visually Impaired) are available in all project languages. AD includes AST (Audio Subtitles) because films are shown in their original language. The application is called EARCATCH (the company is a partner of the project). It has a blue icon with a yellow capital E. It’s free, with free content. It can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
