ST. ALi Italian Film Festival
2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the foremost Italian intellectuals of the 20th century: Pier Paolo Pasolini. To celebrate this occasion, the St. ALi Italian Film Festival organized every year by Palace Cinemas will present, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute, a retrospective dedicated to the great writer and film director from Friuli. The retrospective includes the three movies of the famous ‘Trilogy of Life’: The Decameron (1971), The Canterbury Tales (1972, on its 50th anniversary) and Arabian Nights (1974).
Pier Paolo Pasolini was a poet, director, screenwriter, writer, actor and playwright. However, he is known to the general public mainly as a writer and film director. Profound observer of the changes in Italian society from the second post-war period up to the mid-seventies, as well as a at times controversial figure mainly because of his declared homosexuality, he often aroused strong controversy and heated debates for the radical angle of his opinions, very critical towards the bourgeoisie and the nascent consumer society, as well as against the 1968 political movement and its protagonists. Pasolini died in tragic and still not fully clarified circumstances on November 2, 1975.
In the 1950s Pasolini collaborated with Federico Fellini on the screenplay of Le notti di Cabiria (1957) and La dolce vita (1960), and he was almost 40 when he directed his first film, Accattone (1961). Among Pasolini’s most celebrated films one must mention Mamma Roma (1962), The Gospel according to Matthew (1964), Uccellacci e uccellini (The Hawks and the 
Sparrows) (with a splendid Totò) (1966), Teorema (1968), followed by the films of the Trilogy. Pasolini’s career as a director ended with the extremely controversial Salò, or the 120 days of Sodom (1975), which saw the light in cinemas when Pasolini had already been dead for three weeks.
