From the first sketch to the final stage set, this episode explores the art of stage design and the extraordinary professionals who transform a director’s vision into immersive theatrical worlds. Master carpenters, scenic painters, set builders, and technical specialists work behind the scenes to create the environments in which singers, musicians, dancers, and actors perform.

Produced by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mano d’Opera is a five-part documentary series that celebrates the excellence of Italian opera and the often unseen professions that make it possible. Filmed at some of Italy’s most prestigious theatres, including Teatro alla Scala, Arena di Verona, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and Teatro Massimo in Palermo, the series reveals the history, evolution, and artistry of the crafts that support one of Italy’s greatest cultural traditions.

Through interviews and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, Episode 2 highlights the beauty of stage design and the artisanal knowledge that gives shape and substance to the magic of opera.
