La Moglie Perduta (The Missing Wife) is a Commedia dell’Arte based monologue presented by Pulcinella, the famous Commedia dell’Arte mask from Naples. In La moglie perduta Pulcinella’s wife Zeza, tired of her lazy husband, has decided to leave him. Pulcinella decides to find his missing wife and for the first time he has to leave Naples and have the courage to survive by himself. During this journey Pulcinella will face many adventures and confronts inner and external ups and downs. La moglie perduta is a comic story about love, courage and caring.
La Commedia dell’Arte was born in Italy in the 16th century, marking the beginning of professional theatre. Actors use masks, physical types, and specific gestures to portray a variety of characters. Commedia dell’Arte begins with a canovaccio, i.e. a series of specific events that the actors use as starting point to improvise the text using their character, lazzi (comic ideas or gags), songs, acrobatics, etc. The mask of Pulcinella was invented by the famous actor Silvio Fiorillo, and after him many great Neapolitan actors, such as Antonio Petito, Edoardo De Filippo and Massimo Troisi, have impersonated this character.
