Le macchine a spalla (“shoulder-borne processional structures”) are far more than religious celebrations: they are a living cultural heritage that embodies centuries of history, craftsmanship, and community identity. Recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, these traditions continue to inspire generations.
Tradition, faith, and spectacle come together in one of Italy’s most extraordinary cultural events. Each year, hundreds of bearers lift enormous ceremonial structures onto their shoulders, transforming city streets into vibrant stages filled with music, emotion, and collective participation.
Among the most famous is the Festa dei Gigli in Nola, Campania, which commemorates the return of Saint Paulinus to the city. Eight magnificent, richly decorated obelisks, reaching heights of up to 25 metres, are carried by teams of more than one hundred men and made to “dance” to the rhythm of music in a breathtaking display of faith, strength, and teamwork. Together with Nola, the UNESCO network also includes the Macchina di Santa Rosa in Viterbo, the Varia di Palmi in Calabria, and the Faradda dei Candelieri in Sassari, Sardinia.
