Among the cultural events that animate the city’s cultural life and that the Italian Cultural Institute of Sydney supports, those with Italian artists who are invited by local cultural entities hold a particular meaning, and thus play a vital role in fostering cultural relations between Italy and Australia.

This is the case of Francesca Naibo, an Italian jazz guitarist, who will be in Australia in April to hold a guitar masterclass at the Conservatorium of Music in Melbourne and to present her latest album So much time. was Released by the Australian label Ramble Record in Melbourne the album will be presented in Sydney on Thursday 4 April at 8.00 pm at the Annandale Creative Arts Centre, as part of the series of musical events called Johnston Street Jazz.

A native of Vittorio Veneto (TV) but Milanese by adoption, Francesca Naibo moves easily between all the various conjugations of the guitar, from classical to electric, to fretless up to pedal steel. Engaged for years in the pursuit of solo performance, for years she has been focusing on exploring the field of free improvisation. She has worked with important composers such as Helmut Lachenmann and George Lewis and transcribed Exercises in Futility in collaboration with Marc Ribot.

In 2020 Aut Records released her first solo album entitled Namatoulee, received with enthusiasm by critics and chosen among the records of the year by the “Late Junction” program on BBC Radio 3. Defined as “masterful” by Il Giornale della Musica and “a postcard from the beyond, past the boundaries most guitarists usually accept” from A Jazz Noise. For the specialized magazine Mescalina “there is so much to discover in this artist who appears to be one of the most beautiful promises that we have in Italy today also considering a lightness and mastery of language that leaves one in awe”.So Much Time (Ramble Records), her second solo album, was released last November. It is a work focused on time, born after a long reflection on the past and created through digital recordings and the recovery of some old audio cassettes with the artist’s child voice. A 3-way dialogue is established: the guitar, the adult voice and the child’s voice, in search of different types of time, weaving impossible connections and dense stratifications of memories. In recent months the album has received very positive reviews from BBC Radio 3, from JazzPodium and Rockerilla magazine, which described it as “astonishing and radical”. For further information and reservations: https://www.annandalecreativearts.com/whatson
