Webinar by Prof. Joseph Halevi
The Italian Cultural Institutes of Melbourne and Sydney are collaborating again on another thought-provoking lecture dedicated to the economic history of Europe, in particular since the end of WWII. The lecture will be held by Prof. Joseph Halevi, retired Professor at the Department of Political Economy at the University of Sydney and a member of the faculty of the International University College of Turin.
This talk is based on the research on the political economy of Europe Prof. Halevi has undertaken for the Institute for New Economic Thinking in New York from 2017 to the end of 2019, which resulted in the publication on their website of three papers:
https://www.ineteconomics.org/research/experts/JosephHalevi
The three papers are now being extended into a book.
The purpose of the talk is to highlight the main phases of the process of European economic integration and to single out Italy’s role and position in it. In particular, Prof. Halevi will point out how Italy and Germany represented right from the start the dual dimension of export oriented growth and integration, which in a nutshell encapsulated the duality of the EU well before its formation. It is on such a duality, which is now engulfing a larger number of countries, that the economic dynamics of the EU is being played out.
Joseph Halevi was born in November 1946 in Haifa – then British Palestine, now Israel – from an Italian mother and a Russian father, both of Jewish ancestry. He grew up and was educated in Rome, where he completed his Laurea in Filosofia at the Sapienza University. His thesis was on the macrodynamics of Michal Kalecki, and was supervised by the late Professors Sergio Steve and Paolo Sylos Labini. Joseph Halevi taught Economics at the New School for Social Research in New York and at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He joined the Economics Department of the University of Sydney in late 1978, retiring in 2016. In 1983 he was Professore Ricercatore at the Sapienza University and visiting Professor at the University of Connecticut from 1985 to 1987. From 1987 till 2009 he regularly taught part of the year at the Universities of Grenoble, Nice and of Picardie. In France he also served on the editorial board of Economie Appliquée and of Cahiers d’ Economie Politique. Since 2009 he is Professor at the International University College in Turin. In May 2019 he taught at the Università della Calabria. Joseph Halevi’s main research papers have been collected in the 4 volume set edited by Joseph Halevi-Geoffrey Harcourt-Peter Kriesler-John Nevile, titled Post Keynesian Essays Down Under, London, Palgrave 2016. In November 2019 Halevi completed a research project on the political economy of Europe since 1945 based on a grant from INET in New York. These are now being extended into a book.
