The Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney is pleased to present a short tour of the Apulian trio La Cantiga de la Serena, an ensemble of musicians and researchers who for years have devoted themselves to the revival and re-elaboration of ancient and traditional music from the Mediterranean basin, a true cultural bridge between West and East. A thousand-year journey into the music of the Mediterranean between the hypnotic rhythms of the tarantella of Southern Italy, the bewitching Jewish melodies, the odd tempos of Middle Eastern music.

The Trio will perform on 19 June 2024 in Canberra at the Smiths Alternative venue (76 Alinga Street) at 7.30pm, and the following day, 20 June 2024 at 6pm, at the premises of the Institute located in York Street.

La Cantiga de la Serena is composed by Giorgia Santoro (flute, bass flute, bansuri, tin whistle), Fabrizio Piepoli (vocals, battente guitar, daff) and Adolfo La Volpe (oud, guitar) who perform their own composite repertoire using instruments that belong to different musical cultures, leaving ample space for moments of improvisation, as a free expression of one’s own way of understanding these ancient songs of love and prayer.Santoro, Piepoli and La Volpe will present their latest and fourth album La novia (2023), which follows the release of La Serena (2016), La Fortuna (2019) and La Mar (2021) all published by the Zero Nove Nove record label of Lecce, Italy. The eleven songs of the album – sung in Ladin, Arabic, Italian and in various dialects of Southern Italy – represent yet another outcome of the Trio’s continuous research and exploration to re-propose, in a new and personal key, a repertoire that promotes musical and cultural dialogue between West and East. Along with these premises, the chosen title La Novia (The Bride) recalls an image with a strong archetypal value, especially in the traditional Mediterranean cultures, a symbol with many mystical, esoteric and philosophical implications, nevertheless preserving at the same time modernity and a strong evocative impact.
