LE AMICHE (The Girlfriends) by Michelangelo Antonioni

cinema rebornCinema Reborn 2021

After a forced break due to pandemic restrictions, the collaboration between the Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney and Cinema Reborn resumes this year.

In the vast panorama of films screened around Sydney, Cinema Reborn plays a particular role because it offers Australian and international films that have made history in the art of cinema, often presenting them in a new, restored version.

In addition to numerous films from various sources, in 2021 the association’s steering committee, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute, has included three Italian feature films. These are the works of two of the best known and most appreciated Italian directors, Le amiche (The Girlfriends) by Michelangelo Antonioni and Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) by Luchino Visconti, as well as a gem of the silent era, Filibus, directed in 1915 by Luca Roncoroni and accompanied by the recording of a recorded orchestra performance, arranged by the US distributor.

The Festival will be held from 30 April to 2 May 2021 at the Ritz Cinema in Randwick, opening on Friday, 30 April, with Antonioni’s film, continuing on Saturday 1 May with Visconti’s masterpiece, to end on Sunday, 2 May, with the magical atmosphere of the silent movie.

Of note, with a view to cultural exchange between Australian and Italian cultural entities, is the consolidated collaboration betweenle amiche interna Cinema Reborn and the Cineteca di Bologna Foundation “L’Immagine Ritrovata”.

Le amiche (The Girlfriends) (1955), by Michelangelo Antonioni, 105’

le amiche posterCast: Eleonora Rossi Drago, Gabriele Ferzetti, Franco Fabrizi, Yvonne Fourneaux, Valentina Cortese

Four women friends try to make sense of the suicide attempt by a fifth. Perhaps Michelangelo Antonioni’s greatest early work before he shook the world with the trilogy begun with L’avventura. It bears the first signs of the director’s cinema-changing style. As the friends try to make sense of their world, they find themselves examining their own troubled romantic lives. A brilliantly observed depiction of Italian modern bourgeois life.

Le amiche was restored by the Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata. The funding for the restoration was provided by Gucci and The Film Foundation.
