This presentation is part of the cultural series “Traces of Italy – Legacies of Italians Shaping Australia’s Cultural Landscape” which explores the enduring legacy and influence of notable Italians who have left their mark on Australian society, culture, and the arts.
In this context, in conversation with Daniel Smith, we are proud to introduce Stephen Mould’s acclaimed biography, Carlo Felice Cillario: Italian Maestro of the Australian Opera (Connor Court Publishing, 2024). This detailed and meticulously researched book chronicles the life and career of Carlo Felice Cillario, one of Italy’s most distinguished conductors of the 20th century, whose artistic contributions shaped the landscape of opera both in Europe and, most notably, in Australia.
Cillario was a central figure in the growth of Opera Australia, conducting over a thousand performances and working with some of the greatest voices of his time, including Maria Callas, Montserrat Caballé, and Luciano Pavarotti. Mould’s biography not only captures the personal and professional journey of Cillario but also offers insight into his refined conducting style, his dedication to the operatic art form, and his lasting influence on Australia’s cultural life.
