Contemporary Italian Cinema 2023: Italy at the dawn of the third Millennium

The series entitled Italy at the dawn of the third millennium, borne out of a longstanding collaboration between the Italian Cultural Institute and the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, has come to a close. During its nine editions the Institute and the cultural hub of the Liverpool City Council has offered the Western area of Sydney a wide and qualitative choice of feature films starting with the masterpieces of Neorealism and continuing with the retrospectives dedicated to Mastroianni and Fellini, and with the screening of the most recent works by many Italian directors, thus offering the ever-large audience a cross-section of contemporary Italy.

Santa Lucia (di Marco Chiappetta, 2021)

After living in Argentina for 40 years, Roberto, an author who has gone blind, returns to Naples when his mother dies. With his brother Lorenzo, a musician manqué, he takes a trip through his memories in the city of his childhood, which he can no longer see but only perceive through his remaining senses, his memories, and his imagination, in search of the tragic reason behind his departure. What happens if, after a long exile, a man returns to his hometown, to the places of his life, and can no longer see them? How can a blind man distinguish between reality and his dreams and memories?
