A collaboration between the Instituto Cervantes Sydney and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Sydney, supporting new artistic creation and fostering cultural dialogue between Spain and Italy.
Sydney, 5 November 2026 at 6pm — The Instituto Cervantes Sydney and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Sydney are joining forces in a significant cultural initiative to present The Silent Mediterranean, a new artistic project by Spanish composer and concert pianist Javier Rodríguez. Through the universal language of music and the dialogue between different artistic disciplines, the project celebrates the deep cultural connections between Spain and Italy while supporting contemporary artistic creation in Australia.
Far from a conventional piano recital, The Silent Mediterranean is conceived as an immersive artistic experience exploring the invisible connections between Spain and Italy through music, architecture, light, craftsmanship, memory and silence. The project offers a contemporary Spanish artistic voice through cinematic piano writing, storytelling and contemplation, evoking a Mediterranean landscape beyond folklore and national clichés.
At the heart of the programme are two new works jointly commissioned by the Instituto Cervantes Sydney and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Sydney, presented for the first time in Sydney.
The first, Pietra e Mare, forms part of the concert’s second section, Stone & Light, alongside Fragile Elegy and Morpheus. The work explores the relationship between two fundamental elements of the Mediterranean imagination — stone and sea — translating their textures, contrasts and sense of permanence into music.
The concert culminates in the world premiere of The Silent Mediterranean, the second work commissioned by the two institutions for the project. Conceived as the musical centrepiece of the experience, the composition gives its name to the entire project and brings together its central themes of landscape, memory and silence.
Both premieres reflect the institutions’ shared commitment to supporting new artistic creation and fostering dialogue between Spanish and Italian cultural perspectives in Australia.
The final part of the evening moves beyond music alone. Rodríguez will present La puerta sin Puerta, a collaborative work created with architect Enrique Blanco de Córdova, bringing architecture and musical composition into direct dialogue. The collaboration extends one of the central ideas behind The Silent Mediterranean: that artistic experiences can emerge between disciplines, and that space, light, material and sound can become part of the same narrative.
The concert unfolds as a single artistic journey, with each work introduced through a short poetic reflection. Silence is deliberately treated as an essential element of the experience, inviting audiences to enter the emotional world of each piece rather than follow the conventional structure of a recital.

THE SILENT MEDITERRANEAN
